Filipino American designer David Tupaz brought a burst of color, movement and resort glamour to the runway at Art Hearts Fashion’s Swim Week Las Vegas, presenting men’s and women’s swimwear at AREA15.
Tupaz said the collection drew inspiration from the bright, uninhibited world of “Crayon Colors,” a concept he shared in a Facebook post. The idea came through in a presentation that favored playful color, movement and resort drama over a conventional beachwear formula.
The collection paired men’s and women’s swimwear with bold styling, strong silhouettes and dramatic oversized hats. Promotional coverage of the show described Tupaz’s presentation as defined by “bold elegance,” modern sophistication and a commanding runway presence, giving the resort looks an editorial and theatrical edge.
Tupaz was among the designers featured during the Aug. 7-9 Swim Week Las Vegas program, which Art Hearts Fashion staged at AREA15, an immersive entertainment complex in Las Vegas. The multi-day event brought designers, fashion-industry guests and media together for runway presentations focused on resort and swim fashion.
For Tupaz, the Las Vegas runway was a homecoming. Born in the Philippines, he began as a concert pianist before discovering fashion at a young age. He later studied interior design and entered the fashion industry through work as an assistant to a pattern maker at Oscar de la Renta, according to profiles of the designer.
He went on to establish his label in Las Vegas, where he became known for couture craftsmanship, custom garments and advocacy for the local fashion community. Tupaz has been identified as the artistic force behind David Tupaz Couture and has served as a creative and cultural advocate in the Filipino American community.
While his Swim Week presentation centered on swimwear rather than formal gowns, it carried elements associated with his wider design approach: attention to construction, proportion and visual impact. The result was a collection that treated resort fashion as an opportunity for confidence and expression, from the swim silhouettes to the oversized hats.
Tupaz’s Swim Week appearance also came as he expands his connection to Las Vegas’ Filipino community.
Ahead of the opening of Marikit by David Tupaz at Boulevard Mall, Tupaz welcomed Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo to the new boutique.
Tupaz said the visit was meaningful recognition of his work as a designer and of his contributions to Nevada’s fashion and Filipino American communities. The boutique is located near the Filipino Town cultural corridor.
