Filipina tennis star Alex Eala captured the WTA 125 Birmingham Open singles title on June 7 rallying from a set down to secure her first trophy of the season and another milestone in her young career. Top-seeded Eala defeated doubles partner Nikola Bartunkova of the Czech Republic, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, in the final at the Lexus Birmingham Open, showing the grit and composure that have made her one of the most closely watched rising players in women’s tennis.

The Birmingham victory marked Eala’s second WTA 125 title and her first since a breakthrough run in Guadalajara the previous season. On the grass courts of Birmingham, she battled through momentum swings and fended off late pressure from Bartunkova, closing out the deciding set after more than two hours of play. The result is expected to push her toward a new career-high ranking and strengthen her position ahead of bigger events on the WTA calendar.

Eala’s rise has been fueled by earlier success on the junior Grand Slam stage. In 2022, she won the US Open girls’ singles championship, beating Lucie Havlíčková, 6-2, 6-4, to become the first Filipina and first Philippine player to win a junior singles crown at a Grand Slam event. She did not drop a set throughout that tournament, setting a new benchmark for Filipino and Southeast Asian tennis and inspiring young players who now see a pathway from local courts to the sport’s biggest stages.

In 2022, The Outstanding Filipino Awards (TOFA) recognized Eala as one of its global awardees, honoring her US Open triumph and her role in elevating Filipino visibility in international tennis. She joined a roster of honorees celebrated for excellence in their fields and impact on Filipino communities worldwide. As Eala continues to hoist trophies like the Birmingham Open and push deeper into the professional ranks, she carries that TOFA distinction with her — a reminder that each win is shared by fans and Filipinos watching from afar.
