Gina Planas went to the BTS concert at MetLife Stadium on Aug. 2 driven by pure curiosity about a global phenomenon she had never witnessed firsthand.
She left a convert, finally understanding why BTS commands one of the most devoted fan bases in music.
Planas, a Queens-based mother of four, attended the first of two sold-out tour dates at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, part of BTS’ return to large-scale international touring following a hiatus tied to group activities and new music releases.
A catering business owner who occasionally works as an event planner, Planas is used to putting together events of her own, but nothing quite prepared her for this one.
Asked what made her go watch and eventually join the fandom, Planas did not hesitate.
“To be honest, curiosity. I always wondered what made BTS immensely popular globally,” Planas told TOFA NEWS.
“Grabe, their connection with their fans is insane. But I left as someone who finally understood the magic.”
She described the show as relentless from the opening moments through the finale — featuring pyrotechnics, tight choreography, flames and strobe lighting that held nothing back.
“Sobrang high energy … hindi tinipid ang show,” she said, adding that the production felt like more than her money’s worth. “Sobrang sulit!”
The show started roughly 30 minutes late, Planas said, as fans were still filing in through long entry lines outside.
Once it began, the opening number immediately set the tone for the night.
“They set the whole stadium on fire,” she said. “With that opening number, I fully understood the BTS phenomenon.”
Planas named RM and Jimin as her personal favorites among the seven members, saying she is drawn to RM because he appears “sensible and intelligent.”
She also noticed the wide age range of fans in attendance, including many fellow mothers.
The intermission segment stood out most, she said, calling it unlike anything she had seen at a concert before.
“A masterpiece on its own,” she said of the visuals, storytelling and atmosphere. “Ang galing!”
On Grammy Recognition and Asian Representation
Asked about BTS’ approach to global recognition, including ongoing conversations around international music categories and representation, Planas said she sees value in broader visibility for Asian artists.
“I understand why BTS made their decision, but personally I’m okay with that Asian pop category. If it’s meant to highlight Asian talent and to be recognized, why not, di ba?” she said. “I’m more excited for the Pinoy artists and other Asians as well — to finally break into the mainstream. It’s about time.”
The MetLife Stadium stop was part of BTS’ North American tour, which continues through several major U.S. cities in the coming weeks.
