Under the frescoed ceilings and poolside glow of the historic Versace Mansion in South Beach, Filipino designer Michael Cinco turned Miami Couture Fashion Week into a celebration of high drama and Filipino pride. The Dubai-based couturier, known for crystal-encrusted gowns and sculptural silhouettes, headlined a special runway presentation that fused Old World opulence with modern spectacle.
Cinco’s latest showcase at the landmark Ocean Drive property (once home to the late Gianni Versace) featured sweeping trains, intricate beading and shimmering textiles that have become his couture signature. The show further cemented his status as a go-to designer for celebrities and royals seeking red-carpet “fantasy” dressing, from Beyoncé and Jennifer Lopez to Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey.
His Miami appearance caps a journey that began far from the global fashion capitals, in the coastal city of Catbalogan in Samar, in central Philippines. As a boy, Cinco was transfixed by classic Hollywood films and the costumes worn by Audrey Hepburn in “My Fair Lady,” a cinematic escape that inspired him to pursue fashion. He studied fine arts at the University of the Philippines Diliman before transferring to Slim’s Fashion and Arts School in Manila and later refining his craft at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London.
In 1997, Cinco moved to Dubai, where he reinvented a conventional fashion house and, in 2003, launched his eponymous haute couture label. From there, his ornate, crystal-laden gowns began appearing on international runways, in major pageants and on television, including “America’s Next Top Model.”
Cinco’s body of work — and his role in putting Filipino talent on the global fashion map — earned him the very first TOFA Global Award in Fashion, presented in New York in 2022 during the 12th annual The Outstanding Filipinos in America (TOFA) awards. The honor, bestowed at The Town Hall in midtown Manhattan, recognized his contributions as a Filipino creative whose designs now move seamlessly from Dubai to New York, Paris and beyond.
With his latest outing at the Versace Mansion, Cinco continues to stitch together a narrative of diaspora success — a Filipino designer commanding some of the world’s most storied stages, while inspiring a new generation of fashion dreamers from Samar to South Beach.
