Filipino Canadian Leylah Fernandez opened her title defense at the Mubadala DC Open on July 27 with a convincing victory over Magda Linette.
Fernandez, the defending champion and No. 7 seed, returned to the Washington hard courts looking to repeat the breakthrough run that delivered the biggest title of her career last year. The WTA described her latest win as one in which she “races past” Linette, indicating a match Fernandez controlled from start to finish.
The victory gives Fernandez an encouraging start as she tries to defend the title she won in 2025, when she defeated Anna Kalinskaya in the final to capture the WTA 500 crown. That Washington triumph marked a significant milestone in her career and underscored her ability to deliver on a big stage.
Fernandez’s success also adds to an already notable resume that includes a run to the 2021 U.S. Open final, when she emerged as one of the tour’s most compelling young players. Since then, she has remained a familiar name in women’s tennis and a prominent Filipino Canadian athlete with a growing following.
Linette entered the matchup as a solid test, but Fernandez answered with a sharp, efficient performance that did not require the extended battle some previews had anticipated. The result keeps her momentum intact as she continues her North American hard-court season.
With the opening hurdle cleared, Fernandez will try to build on her Washington form and stay on track in her bid for another title run.
