Imah Dumagay did not set out to become a comedy trailblazer in the Middle East. But nearly two decades after leaving Cotabato City in the southern Philippines for a corporate job in Dubai, she has carved out a space few imagined as the first Filipina stand-up comedian in the Gulf Cooperation Council region, with a growing international reach.
Dumagay’s journey into comedy began after years in the corporate world, where she spent a decade navigating expatriate life before deciding to take a risk on humor full time.
Today, she is known for sharp, relatable routines that tackle stereotypes about overseas Filipino workers, cultural misunderstandings, and the everyday absurdities of marriage and migrant life.
“I talk about what we go through as Filipinos abroad – the expectations, the identity, the survival mode, but I make it funny,” Dumagay has said in past interviews.
Dumagay’s recent work includes her solo show “Rice and Sand,” a deeply personal set about finding a sense of home in Dubai while living far from the Philippines. She has performed the show in Dubai and Bahrain, with plans to bring it to Lebanon and Turkey in 2027.
Her upcoming solo show, “Hey, Daddy,” is scheduled for September 2026 at Meyana Theatre in Dubai’s Jumeirah Beach Hotel and will blend crowd work, live singing, and unfiltered storytelling. The set leans into themes of confidence, beauty, and what it means to live boldly as a Filipina in a global city.
Dumagay’s rise has also drawn international recognition.
In 2025, she was named among the 100 Most Influential Filipinos in the World and performed in the United States at the 15th Annual TOFA Awards in Las Vegas, marking a milestone for a comedian who built her career far from traditional entertainment hubs.
Back in Dubai, she continues to headline shows and collaborate with established Filipino comedians.
In November 2025, she joined Alex Calleja and K Brosas for a sold-out show at the World Trade Centre, signaling growing demand for Filipino comedy in the region.
Beyond the stage, Dumagay is cultivating the next generation of comics through Comedy Kix, a platform she co-founded to provide aspiring performers with open mics, training, and community. Her five-week stand-up workshops guide students through joke writing and performance, culminating in a live showcase.
Her reach extends even further online.
Under the handle @imahcomedy, Dumagay has built a strong digital following with viral sketches such as “The Demotivation Girl,” a satirical take on life coaching, and “The Robbed Girl,” a comedic lens on cultural encounters.
