Filipino American fashion designer Oliver Tolentino is set to present at New York Fashion Week on September 12, joining a growing group of Fil-Am designers getting attention on the spring/summer 2027 fashion calendar.
His solo show, produced by F/ROW, coincidentally places him on the same date as Kenneth Barlis, Michael Cinco, and Alexis Monsanto, turning the day into a notable showcase for Filipino talent in fashion. For Tolentino, the move marks another step in a career built on couture craftsmanship, red-carpet visibility, and a long-running commitment to Philippine artistry.
Tolentino’s story starts far from the runways of New York and Los Angeles.
Born and raised in Orani, Bataan, he has said he knew he wanted to become a fashion designer when he was 7 years old, sketching dresses in school notebooks and learning to sew early with encouragement from his mother. He later studied at Miriam College, Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, and the Fashion Institute of the Philippines before launching his fashion career in Manila. That early training and determination helped shape a designer who would eventually carry his name into international markets.
Before going abroad, Tolentino built a business in the Philippines, first opening a shop called Oliver in Pasig in the 1990s, then moving in 2005 to Makati and using his full name.
In 2009, he opened a boutique on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood, becoming the first Filipino couture designer to successfully expand his operations to the U.S. He immediately became a finalist in the OSCARS Designer Challenge. From there, he focused on custom couture, bridal wear, and ready-to-wear collections that attracted celebrities and stylists looking for something elegant and distinctive. In 2015, Tolentino transferred to a larger boutique on Robertson Boulevard in Beverly Hills.
Tolentino’s designs have appeared on some of the entertainment industry’s biggest stages, from the Oscars and Golden Globes to the Emmys, Grammys, and Cannes Film Festival.
Hollywood celebrities, including Jessica Alba, Carrie Underwood, Fergie, Emmy Rossum, Niecy Nash, Anna Paquin, and Katie Couric, have worn his creations, while his work has also appeared on television programs such as American Idol, America’s Next Top Model, The View, and Fashion Police.
In 2014, his name drew wider recognition when he became the first designer of Filipino descent in 53 years to dress an Oscar winner at the Academy Awards, after Jennifer Lee won for Frozen.
Part of Tolentino’s identity as a designer has been his use of eco-friendly and Philippine-sourced materials. He is known for working with pineapple fiber, abaca, jute, raw silk, and water-lily fabric, and his collections have often been described as eco-couture. Previously, he did an all-eco piña show at NYFW.
He has presented collections in venues and fashion weeks across the world, including Vienna, Bali, the Bahamas, Bangkok, Barbados, the British Virgin Islands, Busan, Geneva, Hong Kong, and the United States, building a reputation that blends sustainability with glamour. That mix has made his work distinct in both the Filipino and international fashion scenes.
Tolentino’s NYFW show also carries added significance because it arrives during a season that has spotlighted more Filipino names on major fashion calendars. For a designer whose career began in the Philippines and expanded through years of hard work, the September 12 show offers another chance to present Filipino craftsmanship on a global stage. It is also another step in a career that has repeatedly bridged heritage and Hollywood.
Tolentino was named one of 100 Most Influential Filipinos in America (TOFA100), in 2020.
