Filipina tennis star set to face Zheng Qinwen in opening-round match in Washington
WASHINGTON — Alex Eala said Sunday that carrying the hopes of Filipino fans worldwide is not pressure but a privilege as she prepares for her debut at the Mubadala Citi DC Open.
“It’s definitely not a burden. I would describe it more as a privilege,” Eala said at the tournament’s media center. “I’m very privileged to be able to carry my flag and represent everything that comes with that.”
The 21-year-old Filipina also emphasized the impact of representation on her growing global following.
“It’s very impactful when someone sees themselves in you,” she said. “If they support me, they see a part of themselves.”
Finding rhythm after Wimbledon
Eala said she is focused on regaining her rhythm after a demanding stretch that included Wimbledon and international travel.
“This is my first week back since Wimbledon, and I’ve had a pretty busy couple of weeks,” she said in response to a question from TOFA NEWS. “My first priority is trying to get back into rhythm. For now I’m taking it match by match.”
She opens against China’s Zheng Qinwen on July 27 and welcomes the test.
“At the moment I only know that I’m playing Qinwen. I’m excited to play her,” she said.
Eala also pointed to Filipina-Canadian Leylah Fernandez, the tournament’s defending champion, as one to watch.
“What she’s done here is really great. She’s a great player and definitely someone to look out for,” she said.
Home support, global stage
Eala, who continues to draw strong support from Filipino and Filipino American fans, said a recent trip home provided a meaningful reset.
“I don’t get to go home very often, so every time I go home, it’s super meaningful,” she said. “To really interact with the people who support me through my journey meant a lot.”
She added that her first experience competing in Washington has been positive.
“I’m super happy to be here in Washington, D.C. The people have been super hospitable, and I’ve had a great time so far,” she said.
Peers see top-tier potential
Eala’s rise has drawn praise from fellow players who spoke to TOFA NEWS about her potential.
Former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori said she has the tools to reach the top tier.
“She has a lot of weapons,” Nishikori said. “She can be top 10 any time if she can stay healthy and mentally stay tough.”
Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka called Eala a standout talent and role model.
“I think she’s incredible. I think she’s a star,” Osaka said. “It’s really cool to have someone like her that people can look up to.”
Osaka added that Eala’s perspective stands out.
“I really love hearing her talk because it’s really cool the things that she says,” she said.
Opening test ahead
Zheng said focus and execution will be key in their first-round matchup.
“The biggest challenge for me will be playing my game as long as I can and maintaining focus from the beginning until the end,” Zheng said.
Eala, meanwhile, is prioritizing singles this week and opted out of doubles to manage her workload after a packed schedule.
“I know what I need to do to get where I want to be, and I trust my team,” she said.
As she begins her campaign in Washington, Eala’s steady approach continues to define her ascent, balancing rising expectations with a clear sense of purpose.
